Camera Obscura & World of Illusions Edinburgh is an exciting destination for the whole family. Located in Scotland's enchanting capital city, it offers a unique experience that combines history and science with a touch of fun. Visitors can explore the Camera Obscura, a Victorian invention which allows them to see amazing views from up high, as well as marvel at optical illusions in the World of Illusions. From the Vortex Tunnel to infinity mirrored rooms, children and adults alike will be sure to be entertained.
The Camera Obscura was developed by scientist Sir Charles Wheatsone in 1835. It consists of an array of lenses and mirrors which project images onto a viewing table inside the building. Guests can observe a 360 degree panoramic view of Edinburgh, including some spectacular landmarks such as Edinburgh Castle and Calton Hill. There are also two rooftop terraces where even more views can be seen.
The World of Illusions showcases some mind-boggling optical illusions using light and sound waves, such as holograms, strobe lighting effects and anamorphic artworks. It also has interactive exhibits such as the Ames Room - visitors can watch people shrink or grow depending on their perspective - and a mirror maze full of tricky corners to get lost in!
On top of this, there are several educational talks given by Camera Obscura staff plus fun shows like ‘Our Magnificent Universe’ which covers topics such as astronomy and space exploration. With so much to offer it's no surprise that Camera Obscura & World of Illusions Edinburgh is one of Scotland’s most popular tourist attractions!
