Gladstone's Land Edinburgh is a historical building of the 17th century located in the heart of Scotland's capital city. It is one of the oldest surviving residential buildings in Edinburgh and was once home to wealthy merchants and their families. The house was built by Thomas Gledstanes, a wealthy cloth merchant and burgess of the City of Edinburgh, in 1617. The building itself is five storeys high and comprises a single main block with two side wings. One of its most impressive features is its external stone staircase, which leads up to the grand entrance at first floor level. Inside, visitors can explore period rooms with original wood panelling, joinery and plasterwork dating back to 1620. On display are also interesting artefacts from the period, including furniture, costumes, paintings and more. Furthermore, Gladstone’s Land offers special guided tours throughout the year that tell tales about its past inhabitants as well as showcasing some of its unique history and architecture. Recently, it has become part of Scotland’s National Trust for Places of Historic Interest or Natural Beauty so that visitors can easily visit this remarkable property and learn more about Scotland's rich heritage through interactive activities such as immersive theatre performances or guided audio tours.
