The National Monument of Scotland, commonly known as the 'Edinburgh Monument' is a large neoclassical monument located in Princes Street Gardens in the heart of Edinburgh, Scotland. The monument was built between 1822 and 1829 to commemorate Scottish soldiers and sailors who died in the Napoleonic Wars. It stands atop an artificial hill constructed from soil taken from the Salisbury Crags nearby. Designed by Charles Robert Cockerell and William Henry Playfair, it was inspired by the Parthenon of Athens and modeled on similar monuments found across Europe in cities like Paris and Rome.
The monumental façade is made up of 12 Corinthian columns that are each 25 feet high, topped with a large frieze depicting 16 heroic figures representing military valor. Atop this sits an ornamental pediment featuring four winged figures—representing Courage, History, Fame and Justice—above a triglyph frieze with bas-relief sculptures featuring men at arms and scenes from classical mythology. A central flagpole flying the Union Flag crowns the entire structure.
At the rear of this majestic construction lie two side chambers: one contains a staircase leading to a viewing platform above; while the other houses several bronze historical plaques detailing heroics performed during battle by Scottish regiments abroad. Each chamber is adorned with elaborate carvings depicting scenes from ancient Greek myths such as Orpheus and Cerberus, Hercules battling Cerberus, Argus slaying Io with his sword, Perseus freeing Andromeda from her chains, Theseus fighting Minotaur, Bellerophon straddling Pegasus while shooting arrows at Chimera and much more.
The National Monument not only provides visitors with stunning views over Edinburgh but also serves as an important reminder of Scotland's valiant commitment to victory in times of war long gone by.
