Edinburgh Castle stands atop a dormant volcano in the heart of Scotland's capital city and is an iconic symbol of the country. The castle has a long, rich history dating back to the 12th century, when it was used as a royal residence, military stronghold, and seat of power. One of its most famous features is Mons Meg, a 15th-century cannon that was once used for sieges and military operations. The cannon is made from cast iron and weighs over 16 tons. It is said to have been fired as far as two miles away! Edinburgh Castle has also been home to many notable figures throughout history including Mary Queen of Scots, who was imprisoned there until her execution in 1587.
The castle also houses several museums such as the National War Museum and the Honours of Scotland – the oldest crown jewels in Britain. Today, Edinburgh Castle welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors every year who come to admire its grandeur which continues to captivate people from around the world.
