St. Giles Cathedral, a stunning example of Gothic architecture, is located in the heart of Edinburgh, Scotland's capital city. Built in the 12th century, the cathedral is one of the most recognisable landmarks in Edinburgh, widely regarded as a symbol of national identity and pride.
The cathedral is home to some of Scotland's most significant religious and historical artifacts, such as the Thistle Chapel and St. Margaret's Chapel - both built in 1466 - as well as the John Knox Pulpit which was donated by John Knox himself in 1572. It also contains many sculptures and stained glass windows that tell its long history, including a memorial window dedicated to King James VI of Scotland (who later became King James I of England).
Other spectacular features include The Heart of Midlothian paving stones embedded into the pavement outside – created from stone salvaged from St Giles’ ruinous predecessor – and The Great West Door with its incredible carvings depicting biblical scenes and figures from medieval Scots history. Inside there are two grand organs, beautiful music echoing throughout the church from daily services as well as regular concerts held year-round.
St Giles is also known for its captivating stained glass windows which allow glorious streams of colourful light to filter into the interior – providing a breathtaking spectacle for visitors to admire. Renowned for being one of the oldest surviving buildings in Edinburgh’s Old Town quarter, it continues to serve as a vital place of worship while welcoming thousands upon thousands of visitors each year who come to marvel at its magnificence and explore its illustrious history.
