The Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh, Scotland is the official residence of Her Majesty The Queen when she visits Scotland. It is located at the end of the Royal Mile and dates back to the 16th century, with a very rich history steeped in culture and tradition. It was originally founded as an abbey by King David I in 1128 and has served as a royal palace for more than 500 years. It is also renowned for its grand architecture, beautiful gardens, and priceless works of art.
The Palace consists of two main buildings - the Old Palace and the New Palace - both of which attract thousands of visitors each year from all over the world. The Old Palace contains many historic rooms such as Mary Queen of Scots' bed chamber, while The New Palace boasts state apartments which are used by members of the Royal family when they visit Scotland.
Visitors can explore various parts of the palace including the iconic and majestic Great Gallery, as well as St Margaret’s Chapel – which is the oldest building in Edinburgh's Royal Mile – along with other important historical artifacts such as armor, furnishings and fine artworks. At certain times throughout the year visitors are able to tour around some areas that normally remain off-limits including Queen Mary’s chambers. In addition to this, guided tours can be taken through the gardens with their magnificent views across Arthur’s Seat.
Holyrood Abbey is also an important part of The Palace complex; founded by King David I it has undergone many transformations throughout its centuries-long history but still stands today with its wonderful architecture intact - offering visitors an insight into traditional Scottish culture during their visit to Scotland’s capital city.
