The close is made up of a maze of chambers that have been preserved in remarkable condition over the centuries due to its lack of light and air. You can explore several floors below ground level, each one revealing different stories linked with apprenticeships, trades and tradesmen’s tools used during the 17th century. There are also tales about some of the people who lived there including Mary King herself, who ran a business at ground level on the Royal Mile before being forced to relocate during the 1645 plague outbreak.
On your visit you can join guided tours which bring this fascinating history to life while giving you plenty of opportunities to explore at your own pace. You’ll learn about how merchants stored their goods and how they prepared for winter months by keeping warm with candles and heating pans filled with coal from nearby beaches.
