The majestic Scott Monument Edinburgh is a Victorian Gothic memorial to the celebrated Scottish author, Sir Walter Scott. It stands on Princes Street Gardens and is an iconic landmark of the capital city. The monument was designed by George Meikle Kemp and built between 1840-1846 with its final height being an impressive 200 feet tall, making it the largest monument to a writer in the world. The spire of the monument is decorated with many statues of characters from Scott's novels including Rob Roy, Russel, Lady Flora MacIvor and more. At the base of the monument are 64 statues depicting those who were close to Scott or influenced him, such as contemporaries and family members. Visitors can climb up 287 steps inside to reach a viewing platform from which you can take in magnificent views out across Edinburgh and beyond. On each corner of the monument are four statutes representing Inspiration, Poetry, History and Romance - each one carved from pink sandstone quarried from Bedrule in Scotland's Borders region.
